Sampling Locations

map of Moorea The Moorea Coral Reef LTER site is the coral reef complex that surrounds the island of Moorea, French Polynesia (17°30'S, 149°50'W). Moorea is a small, triangular volcanic island 20 km west of Tahiti in the Society Islands of French Polynesia.

The MCR LTER database of sampling locations serves as a controlled vocabulary for sites in all MCR LTER Biotic and Oceanographic time-series datasets.

LTER Sites 1 and 2 are on the north shore. LTER Sites 3 and 4 are on the southeast shore. LTER Sites 5 and 6 are on the southwest shore. Cooks Bay is the eastern one of the two north-facing bays. Oceanic 1 is in deep water, north of Cooks Bay. The fringing reef, lagoon, back reef, and fore reef zones are defined on the Habitats Studied page.

Approximate site outlines may be downloaded as a kmz file, viewable in Google Earth. GIS data are available to MCR LTER researchers on the internal website.
