MCR and SBC LTER Scientists, Graduate Students, and Outreach staff hosted a booth at the Community Environmental Council's 2012 Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival on April 21st and 22nd to raise public awareness about MCR and SBC LTER research activities. The theme for this year's Earth Day was "Mobilize for the Earth" and the festival attracted 35,765 people over its two day run. As one of eight Family Passport stops, the combined MCR and SBC LTER booth invited festival goers to spin a giant "Wheel of Reef Risk" in order to learn more about the types of threats faced by the planet's coral reefs and what actions citizens can take locally to help counter these threats. Participants were able to ask questions of SBC and MCR researchers and graduate students, view informational posters, complete a coloring and word problem activity designed for children, and discuss research related issues.
